Poetry Test on Tues 12/19!
Here are the questions that will be on the test! (Amazing! A teacher giving away the test questions in advance!)
1. Does this poem have a regular meter/rhythm? Explain.
2. Does the poet use rhyme? If yes, give an example & explain the rhyme scheme, if any.
3. Give some examples of sensory images from the poem.
4. Does the poet use alliteration? If yes, give an example.
5. Does the poet use onomatopoeia? If yes, give an example.
6. Does the poet use any similes? If yes, give an example & explain.
7. Does the poet use any metaphors? If yes, give an example & explain.
8. Does the poet use personification? If yes, give an example & explain.
9. Are there any other examples of figurative or symbolic language in the poem? If yes, give an example & explain.
10. Is this a lyric or narrative poem? Explain your answer.
You will then have to write an essay about the poem in which you identify the speaker, summarize the poem and interpret the poet's message.
The tricky part is you will be answering these questions based on a poem that we have not read before in class -- and I'll be handing out 4 or 5 different poems in class.

Homework due Thurs 12/14 -
Prepare a 2nd draft of your best poem to be turned in to Mr. Porter.
Revise your poem by: eliminating cliches, adding concrete sensory details & active verbs, cutting your poem down to what is absolutely essential, and taking RISKS!!!
Please type or write it out very neatly. Make sure your name is on it.
Remember: I'm not interested in reading your bad first drafts. Don't rip one of them out of your notebook & hand it to me tomorrow. Find the bad first draft that has potential, re-write it, improve it, and give it to me the new & improved version tomorrow.
